The Influence of Urban Infrastructure on Heat — Examples from Monterrey and Mumbai
In cities, land cover is determined by infrastructure — both gray (roofs, pavements) and green (urban forests, street trees, streams and reservoirs). And choices among infrastructure options that provide the same function, like stormwater management, can have very different impacts on land cover (for example, vegetated streams instead of paved drainage channels). The relationship between land cover and heat is a consistent finding in cities and research where WRI has worked to identify cooling solutions. And the absence of cooling land cover is often found in neighborhoods where vulnerable people concentrate — exacerbating inequality in exposure to extreme heat.
Oh . All that cost billions. Here .billions there. What is the tax increase cost.for us. I've been told that ALL the members of Parliament own 2 to 4 + pieces of real-estate rented which is why rents won't come down. I have a hard time buying into this. Would be nice to know if there is any truth to this..
Lots of buildings going up here in Ottawa. Lots for rent. Un affordable due to salaries too low or corporations who own the buildings to greedy.
If China can build a working hospital in a few weeks, all prefabricated. During the Pandemic. Why can't we build housing, with built in environmentally features at affordable rates?
In Briten, there is a programe called DIY SOS, BBC. take a look at that, for building ideas. Granted, we would not be able to get trades men to work for free. But their housing ideas are great.
Thanks Neil, very useful as always. Should we also stress the need for bolder acquisition (existing rental buildings) and office-to-housing plans+funds? (apologies if I missed that on your posts)
Thanks for writing this, really happy to be informed on what this plan means and how it can be improved. How can every day people help push for the missing pieces to be adopted into this plan?
Thanks. Honestly, I don't have an easy answer for that. Let's wait for the election and for the dust to settle, and then reconsider how best to advocate.
Unfortunately, at my age been through this two other times. In both cases more $$ was not the solution. It was the problem. In both cases it required innovation & a lot of collaboration to not change what people do but how they do it. The good part. Due to the 1989 down turn. We actually have the ability to bring the system into the 21st century of sustainability. The bad part. Change is always a bitch . As you always have to out think. Those that say. I am the boss. The system can only work in one way. Only it no longer sustainable. Then come the hard part. Figuring how to create a win win win situation. Without doing more damage than good.

Sounds good. Thank you for all the work you do.
